Metro programs cluster in two shapes. In-home trainers keep one to three dogs at a time and tend to sit in the suburbs where they have the space; facility programs run larger groups closer to the city. Neither is better — the home vs. facility guide covers which suits which dog. What matters more is that the trainer has handled your dog's actual problem, and that the follow-up lessons are somewhere you'll really drive to.
Pricing across the area typically runs $2,000–$6,000, with the real spread explained here. Ask every trainer the same question — what's included? — because equipment, the go-home lesson and follow-ups are bundled by some and billed by others.
This page combines 33 programs across 13 listed cities in the Sacramento Area area — Sacramento, Lincoln, Auburn, Elk Grove. Board and train is one of the few dog services people routinely drive across a metro for, because you only make the trip at drop-off and pick-up, so a trainer thirty miles away is a realistic option rather than a compromise.
Metro-area programs generally run $2,000–$6,000, a step above rural pricing because trainers here keep fewer dogs and pay more for space. Two-week obedience programs sit at the low end; four-to-six-week behavior modification for reactivity or aggression sits at the top. Several programs on this page publish a price; most quote after an evaluation, so request quotes from two or three and compare what is actually included.
Closeness matters less than fit. What should decide it: whether the trainer has handled your dog's specific issue, how many dogs they take at once, where dogs sleep (a home or a kennel), and how many follow-up lessons are included. Distance only really matters for those follow-ups, which are easier to attend when the trainer is within an hour.
Many metro trainers do, and some include transport in the program price precisely because their clients are spread across the area. It is listed inconsistently on trainer websites, so ask when you request a quote.
