It can meaningfully change aggressive behavior, but "fix" oversells it. Aggression is managed and rehabilitated rather than cured — a program can dramatically improve your dog's thresholds, impulse control, and response to redirection, while you remain responsible for management afterward. Trainers who promise a permanent cure in two weeks are a red flag. Expect a four-to-six-week minimum and substantial owner follow-up.
Behavior modification programs run higher than obedience programs, commonly $3,000–$8,000. The premium reflects longer stays (often four to six weeks), lower dog-to-trainer ratios, and the handling risk involved. Some trainers charge a daily behavior rate — $175–$250 per day is typical — rather than a package price.
Reactivity is an over-the-top emotional response — barking, lunging, spinning at the end of the leash — usually rooted in fear, frustration, or over-arousal. Aggression is behavior intended to create distance or do harm: growling, snapping, biting. Reactivity often looks alarming but is more tractable; true aggression with a bite history needs a trainer who explicitly handles bite cases and will tell you honestly what outcome is realistic.
Many will, but not all, and you must disclose it up front. Trainers who accept bite cases typically require a longer minimum stay, an in-person evaluation before enrollment, and sometimes a veterinary behavior consult. Concealing a bite history endangers staff and other dogs, and will normally void your agreement.
Approaches vary widely, and the industry disagrees sharply. Some trainers use purely positive reinforcement and behavior modification protocols like counter-conditioning; others use balanced methods including prong or e-collars. Ask directly what tools would be used on your dog, what the trainer does when the dog fails to comply, and what their plan is if the method is not working. A clear, specific answer matters more than which camp they belong to.
