Most obedience programs guarantee a core set: sit, down, place (go to a bed and stay), come/recall, heel, and a release word. Better programs proof these around real distractions — parking lots, stores, parks — rather than only in a training room. Ask whether the commands are taught on-leash only or to off-leash reliability, since that difference usually separates the two-week and three-to-four-week tiers.

Off-leash training means your dog reliably responds to commands without a physical leash, usually conditioned with a remote (e-collar) as a backup cue. It is genuinely useful if you hike, camp, or want freedom in unfenced areas. It is not necessary for a dog whose life is walks, a fenced yard, and household manners — and it costs more, since it typically requires a longer program.

Many balanced trainers use remote collars for off-leash work; force-free trainers do not use them at all. Used competently, a modern e-collar works at a low level the dog barely notices — the goal is a tap on the shoulder, not a punishment. Used badly, it causes fear and fallout. If a trainer uses one, ask how they condition the dog to it, what level they work at, and how they measure that the dog is comfortable.

Follow the go-home lesson exactly for the first two weeks, keep the same commands and equipment the trainer used, and hold the structure — most regression happens because the household quietly returns to old rules. Book the included follow-up sessions rather than saving them for a crisis, and ask the trainer for written notes on what was taught and how.
